The Israeli authorities announced Monday it will increase by 30 % the quantity of goods transported by road to the besieged Gaza Strip following the government decision to ease the blockade imposed on the Palestinian enclave .
“We informed the Palestinian side yesterday that we are able to grow over 30 % the amount of goods entering Gaza , “said Moshe Levi , Israeli army officer in charge at Erez , a crossing point in northern Gaza .
” In the wake of this decision, further additions in terms of variety and quantity will be made over time on commodities entering the Gaza Strip , ” Levi said at a news briefing.
The Israeli government has announced measures Sunday to ease its blockade on Gaza , but said it will maintain the Marine headquarters . The measures include increasing the quantity of food and easing the procedure for entry and exit of people in the enclave.
The policy change comes after the May 31 incident in which the Israeli navy commandos attacked a flotilla of international humanitarian to Gaza and killed nine activists aboard a boat .
The carnage caused a chorus of outrage against Israel within the international community, since that puts pressure on Israel to lift or mitigates the siege of Gaza .
Since the Islamic resistance movement seized Gaza in 2007 , Israel imposed a strict blockade on the enclave , prompting criticism around the world claiming that the seat has worsened the humanitarian situation of 1.5 million Gazans .
