Naoto Kan, the former finance minister and newly elected head of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ power) became the new Prime Minister of Japan after the approval Friday of the lower house of Japan.
Mr. Kan was named Prime Minister in the powerful lower house, winning 313 votes out of 477. The vote of the upper house will be held later because its outcome is less important because the lower house may revoke its decision if necessary.
Mr Kan was the 94th Prime Minister of Japan and the fifth Prime Minister in less than five years.
Mr. Kan is expected to deliver his policy address and receive questions from representatives of the ruling party and opposition next week in the Diet (Parliament).
The new cabinet will likely be launched Tuesday.
